THE STORY

A lifetime of seeing things differently.

Rich Schell’s path to interior design has never been a conventional one

and he wouldn’t have had it any other way.

The eye was always there.

Born in Casper, Wyoming, and raised throughout Wyoming, Montana, and North Dakota, Rich was the youngest of three children in an oil-industry family.

His father was a respected oil executive, but from an early age Rich's interests leaned in a decidedly different direction. He was the precocious kid constantly rearranging his bedroom, working in the garden, noticing beautiful things, and imagining how spaces could be made better.

By high school, his classmates had already figured him out: Rich was voted “Most Likely to Own a Clothing Store or Interior Design Firm.

A few unexpected turns

After graduation, Rich went to work in the oil fields, following in his father’s footsteps and embracing the challenge of an industry far removed from design.

In another chapter, he auditioned for and was accepted into Up with People, spending a year on the road performing across 22 states, Canada, and Bermuda, including an appearance as part of the halftime festivities at Super Bowl XIV.

Creativity, however, had always been waiting in the wings.

Where it all came together

Beginning at age 13, Rich worked in flower shops through high school and beyond, learning floral design, installations, composition, color, and the art of creating something beautiful from individual elements.

After moving to Colorado Springs in 1985, he briefly worked with an uncle who owned a flower shop before joining The Broadmoor as a floral designer.

Clients who initially knew Rich for flowers began asking for help with Christmas decorating, entertaining, furniture placement, and eventually entire rooms.

A floral arrangement became a living room. Holiday décor became furnishings. And Rich realized that what he had instinctively been doing since childhood could become a career.

The Design Philosophy

Collected.

Rich believes a home should feel gathered over time rather than ordered from a catalog. Art, antiques, furnishings, books, flowers, objects, and memories all have a place.

Unexpected.

Color, pattern, texture, art, and contrast come together without following a formula. The unexpected detail is often what gives a room its character.

Personal.

The most successful interiors begin with the people who live in them. Rich looks beyond trends to understand how his clients live, entertain, collect, and experience home.

The WORK

A point of view.

Rich's interiors bring together color, art, texture, craftsmanship and the personal collections that make a house feel unmistakably like home.

RICH SCHELL INTERIORS

Nearly four decades of creating spaces with personality

Today, Rich is the founder and principal designer of Rich Schell Interiors, where his work spans an extraordinary range of homes and projects.

Over more than 30 years in professional design, his interiors have earned numerous awards and recognition in Colorado and across the country.

His approach has never been about following a formula. It is about understanding the people who will live in a space, trusting his eye, mixing the unexpected with the beautiful, and creating homes that feel collected, personal, comfortable, and entirely their own.

Many clients have become lifelong friends, and many projects have led to second homes, third homes, and the homes of the next generation.

Margo Harlow

Office & Procurement

Margo Harlow joined Rich Schell Interiors in 2022 after moving from Gillette, Wyoming, to Colorado Springs to live with her mother, Norma Schell.

And yes, you read that correctly. Margo is Rich’s big sister!

The Schell family moved Norma to Colorado Springs in 2017. She lived independently for her first several years here, but when it became clear that she needed a little more help, Margo made the generous decision to leave her home in Wyoming and move in with her. In return, she went to work for her “baby brother” although we suspect she still enjoys reminding Rich who is really in charge!

Born in Riverton, Wyoming, Margo was raised throughout Wyoming, Montana, and North Dakota. After marrying, she lived in several different places and spent many years raising her family in the Pacific Northwest before eventually returning to Wyoming.

Margo is the proud mother of six children and the delighted grandmother of lots and lots of grandchildren. Her family is now spread from coast to coast, as well as throughout Wyoming and Colorado.

At Rich Schell Interiors, Margo manages the procurement, bookkeeping, and essential paperwork that keep a busy and growing design firm running smoothly. Her attention to detail, organization, and steady hand have made her an invaluable part of the company and what began as a way to help her family has certainly grown into a full-time job!

Rich loves having his big sister by his side, sharing in the day-to-day life of the business and helping Rich Schell Interiors continue to grow. For Margo and Rich, working together is more than simply a family affair it is a wonderful new chapter in a lifetime of shared history.
